CUIMHNEAMH

Preserving the folklore and heritage of Slieve Gullion and its people

Cuimhneamh (pronounced KWIV-noo) is a community organisation dedicated to bringing the history and folklore of South Armagh to the wider world — rooted in the landscape of Slieve Gullion and the life’s work of folklorist and writer Michael J. Murphy.

Michael J. Murphy

Born in Liverpool, raised in Dromintee, Murphy spent his life collecting the folklore, stories and traditions of South Armagh for the Irish Folklore Commission. Folklorist, playwright, republican socialist — his archive runs to over 60 boxes of material now held at PRONI.

The Archive

Browse digitised manuscripts from Murphy’s collection at PRONI — handwritten field notebooks capturing the oral traditions, superstitions, folk cures and stories of Slieve Gullion. 33 volumes available, with PDF downloads.

The Podcast

Listen to Now We’re Talking — a six-part series produced by Derry’s Nerve Centre exploring Murphy’s life, his archive at PRONI, his plays, the folklore he collected, and the legacy he left behind.
